Barred Owls (Strix varia) prepare their nests in Dead Trees in January and February.
She is ready and waiting for her mate and to hatch those eggs. Her mating cry sounds like “hoo-WAAAHHH”.
Barred owls often return year after year to the same nesting site. If you are in a wild space at night you might hear a deep hooting sound that resembles “Who cooks for you?”. That’s a barred owl. Both males and females look alike but the females (~20” tall) are about 2” taller than the males. Other names for this owl are: hoot owl, rain owl, wood owl, eight hooter, striped owl, bleck-eyed owl, swamp owl and laughing owl.
I very much enjoyed and was challenged by the different textures in this piece.
